Artist's Comments

This item harnesses and amplifies the innate chaos potential within its wearer to the extent that it begins to warp the laws of probability around them.

It will not make the impossible happen, merely the superlatively improbable, but sometimes, that's all you need.

Disclaimer:
All use is at your own risk. I do not guarantee that this item will work, and accept no responsibility if it does.

NOT TO BE USED ON SHIPS FITTED WITH INFINITE IMPROBABILITY DRIVE - any breach in the engine's shielding could spark a chain of events which would cause the universe to implode, or turn into a roast turkey, or both.

Possession or use of the chaos engine in the Nariyan system carries heavy penalties. No, seriously, don't try it. The orbital security grid contains a probability shielded weapon which suppresses the improbability generated by the device. It will also inform the local enforcers of your vessel signature, current coordinates, and projected flight path. Nariyan law enforcement have their sense of humour surgically removed, and one of those devices nearly toppled the government. You have been warned.

You cannot break Murphy's law, only bend it temporarily.

[Acknowledgement must here go to the creator of the infinite improbability drive, Douglas Adams.]

But then... Temporarily means infinitely.
If you define "temporary" as "not forever", then you could bend Murphy's law infinitely, because you could bend it until the sun goes nova and kills everything within several light years, but there's still a quadrillion years until the destruction of all matter, and even then <blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah>

Um, yes. It's an awesome design.

I think by definition, temporarily has to be less than infinite. Temporary denotes a limited time, while infinity is defined as being without limit.

However, you are correct in that I should have been more specific. So, how long will it hold for? I must honestly admit that I do not know. I do not even know if Murphy's law will always reassert itself in every case, my experience is limited, and every time one activates such a device, there is the possibility that it will produce a different result. However, it has never happened before, and if one became complacent, believing that one was invulnerable to Murphy's law, it would be the worst possible time for Murphy's law to reassert itself, creating an opportunity for Murphy's law to reassert itself in a recursive fashion. Why does the recursion affect the device? Perhaps it develops a vulnerability over time, seeing what happens within its sphere of influence as normal. Once the pattern is established, Murphy's law becomes a disturbance to the pattern, and a recursive version becomes a big, fat, darkly comedic disturbance, the very best kind. So to disturb your universe, it will give you the one thing that you were not expecting - the predictable effects of the primary rule of the universe. Why does this not happen immediately? Well, for a start, it relies on its sentient wearer for knowledge concerning the rules of the universe. Why does it take longer in some cases than in others? Well, some people take longer to get used to new rules (or lack thereof) than others. Think of Alice in Wonderland, who, despite the fact that the world around her made no sense, kept trying to predict it using the rules of the real world. The ill-fated Nariyans on the other hand, were used to constant rule changes dictated by the whims of a cruel and capricious ruler, and so quickly adjusted to the new scheme of reality. That was their downfall.

So what I should have said is, "While it does seem to negate the effects of Murphy's Law, it could possibly cease to do so at any time, and in all cases that I know of, Murphy's law has reasserted itself within a short period of activation."

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.

The moral of the story is to never adjust to anything, then?
I sorta like that, I think.
I also like the way my lip just started bleeding.
So the engine will work until one really doesn't want Murphy's law to be in effect, in which case it will either deactivate and restore the law, or not.
It seems vaguely sentient.

Perhaps it is. Or perhaps what you perceive is merely the twisted sense of humour of the universe itself.
:iconyumeuchiyume:
Mayhap.
It'd certainly explain a lot.

"Your weapons are no match for ours! People of Mars, surrender!"
"Um, this isn't Mars. This is Earth."
"Earth? Earth-with-nuclear-weapons Earth?"
"Yes."

Glad you like it, though probabability warping technology can be more trouble than it's worth . I've just sold it, so it's someone else's problem now. I just hope she knows what she's doing.
